Appreciation and Kindness at the Nexieplex
Since we opened our doors in 2004, our culture has always fostered opportunities for Nexies to show appreciation and kindness to each other through recognition programs. First was our “On the Spot” program where Nexies would write thank you notes to each other for going above and beyond along with giving them some sort of treat. With the digital age, this has evolved into a new program where we give each other “Karma Points” and at the end of each quarter, the Nexie with the highest number of Karma Points, gets rewarded with a gift card.
What is the Richard Miller Random Act of Kindness Award?
In 2015, an idea was suggested to allow employees the chance to anonymously submit random acts of kindness they had acted upon throughout the year. The winner would receive $500 to donate to a charity of their choice. Over time, it gravitated toward nominating other Nexies and in 2020, all submissions were made from employees recognizing the good deeds of their fellow colleagues.
The first recipient of the Random Act of Kindness award was Richard Miller. In 2015, Rich was in and out of the hospital for chemotherapy treatments. Around the Christmas holiday, Rich took $100, in the form of $10s and $20s, and put them in cards, handing them out randomly at the nurses’ station in the hospital and on people’s cars. His thoughtfulness and kindness was legendary and despite the challenges he was facing in his life, he always found a way to brighten someone else’s day. Sadly, he passed away in 2016 and in honor of him, we renamed the award and ever since, his family has chosen the winner each year.
