Celebrating Women\u2019s History Month: What Has Changed for Women Since 1987?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The year was 1987. The New York Giants won Super Bowl XXI, and Phil Simms was the first to say, \u201cI\u2019m going to Disney World!\u201d Everyone was listening to Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, and The Bangles\u2019 \u201cWalk Like an Egyptian.\u201d The cult classic \u201cDirty Dancing\u201d premiered, along with the number one movie of the year, \u201cThree Men and a Baby,\u201d and the beloved television series \u201cFull House.\u201d Some of the biggest news stories were the rescue of baby Jessica, Black Monday, and President Ronald Reagan delivering the infamous line, \u201cMr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!\u201d A new home cost roughly $92,000, a gallon of gas was 89 cents, and a dozen eggs were 65 cents.<\/p>\n

Did you know 1987 was also a notable year for women? In 1987, U.S. Congress declared March Women\u2019s History Month, seven years after President Carter issued the first presidential proclamation for National Women\u2019s History Week. His message stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAs Dr. Gerda Lerner has noted, \u2018Women\u2019s history is women\u2019s right \u2014 an essential, indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI urge libraries, schools, and community organizations to focus their observances on the leaders who struggled for equality \u2014 Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman, and Alice Paul.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstanding the true history of our country will help us to comprehend the need for full equality under the law for all our people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
